Since the Sun represents both the vitality and the light of the self, it is an important thing to know about Solar return of the year.

The Solar return in horoscope is a chart constructed for the time the Sun returns to its exact natal position (degree and sign). This will be within 24 hours of the birth time each year. The Solar return chart in the horoscope of the Sun’s return, a return to the sense of identity, purpose, another initiation into the experience of the self.  The chart will identify important areas of concern for the self during the upcoming year. Each Solar return chart will represent a year and be in effect from one birthday to the next.  In a sense it is a ‘natal’ chart for one year, providing a snapshot of the planet's patterns that will show over the next year. Therefore it can be delineated much the same as a natal chart.

Solar returns can be used as a secondary chart to examine planetary patterns and possibilities for any particular year. Once you have your Solar return charts laid out in sequential order from birth, then you can examine the angles and planets to see how they are placed in the chart. Once you have studied each of the planets in the Solar return you will be more confident with how to approach that particular year.

How to Read  Solar Returns:

In order to use Solar returns effectively, you need to  generate the solar return horoscopes  using your natal birthplace. The Solar return chart suggests the atmosphere, themes and spheres of importance in the individual life over the coming year. The Solar return chart is operational from one birthday to the next.

When beginning to understand how to effectively use the Solar return chart. Following are the steps to read the Solar return chart.

1. The house Occupied the Sun:  The Sun is definitely the most important planet to consider in the interpretation of Solar return. Its house position shows where one may express the self creativity that takes place during that particular year. It also denotes the area of greatest recognition as well as the area the individual will identify, success, honour, pride and accomplishments for that particular year. Let's say your Sun falls in the 12th house on Solar return, it means you will be recognized in foreign land and there will be some connection with foreign countries. However one must be careful of seeking status because the 12th house is the house of loss and there is a tendency to lose one’s identity. Any planet conjunct with the Sun is very important for that year. That planet describes the nature of activities, events, conditions that unfold in the coming year.

2. The Ascendant: The Ascendant of the Solar return chart symbolizes what is rising to the surface of our personality during the coming year. Each year the Solar returns symbolizes an aspect of the personality, which is in focus or may even be reborn over the course of the year.

A planet in the ascendant is also very important to note since this energy may be something that the individual needs to see and relate with during the coming year. It is the part of the personality rising to the surface and it will demand attention and direction for the coming period. Depending on the nature of the planet the energy will influence their personality. Any planets in close relation to the Sun and ascendant affect the nature of how one perceives reality. How one can project the self and what one can consider important in dealing with others. The behaviour and activities which one expresses in life during that year is also important.

3. The Moon in the Solar Return: The Moon is associated with change and fluctuation according to its house position. The Moon reflects the individual's emotional nature during the Solar return year. The type of feelings you have during that year and it can be shown by the Moon's sign, position, and aspects. The Moon's sign can be important because it is indicative of what the individual feels during the year. The house position of the Moon indicates where you may be aware of new psychological and emotional developments.

4. Planets near or in the 10th house (MC) will signify what is brought to public attention during the year. These planets will seek to be expressed through the career goals. Career during the coming year and needs conscious attention directed towards it.

5. Reading of other planets: Generally speaking, the planets in the Solar return chart are read the same as in the natal chart. Each planet of the Solar return chart needs to be considered its sign, house position, aspects, and any other important considerations (retrogradation, combust etc.). The house position indicates where the energies focused for the year. For e.g. Mercury  sign interpretations in the Solar return chart symbolizes what type you are thinking during the coming year.

6. The Lunar Nodes: The Lunar Node highlights the areas of that year that are destined to occur no matter what you do. The Nodes can give hints of which areas of your life are attracting the fates attention in the coming year.

In the Solar Return chart (Varshphal), the planets laid differently from the natal chart as they are considered in the context of that particular year, not for the lifetime.
