Graha Yuddha ( Planetary War) in Astrology

Graha Yuddha in Vedic Astrology is term used for as a Planetary war between two planets. Planetary war occurs when two planets are within one degree of each other, either in the same sign or in adjacent signs. the planets which hold lower degree is winner and the planet which have high degree is loser. Graha yuddha can be happen in only in five planets; Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. All planets are moving in their own (elliptical) path around Sun. During rotation when they come on top of each other as seen from earth in their own orbit. Due to the distance from earth it look like these planets are together, even though in reality they are separated by large distance, but their rays affects each other. This phenomenon is termed ‘Graha Yuddha’ or ‘planetary war. Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu are never at war with any planet. Close conjunction with Sun causes Combustion while that of Moon is known as ‘Sam agama’.

Depending on various factors, defeated planets lose their power and not able to produce good results. The defeat planet (especially as Ascendant lord) can suffer dramatically.  Losing its power as house lord and as (significator) karaka over matters it rules.  The house in which this phenomenon occurs is destroyed and the individual suffers  This condition can also be observed with transiting planets.

In Astrology Text there are four types of planetary war depending on their longitude e.g, Bheda, Ullekha, Amsu Mardana and Apasavya.

1. Bheda: When two planets in a same direction and overlapping, they fight in Bheda (occultation). In this case the planet nearer to us on earth completely obstructs the farther one. This is also known by the name Chandanam (occultation)

2. Ullekha: When the rims of two planetary touch each other but does not overlap, it is called Ullekha. In other words, when the graha-bimbas (discs) of planets seem to touch each other (sparsha) it is called Ullekha. This is also known by the name Rodhanam (obstruction)

3. Amsu-mardana: When the rays of two planets appear to clash each other, it is known as Amsu-mardana. Another name for this kind of planetary war is Kirana sanghatana (clash or rays) and yet another name is Rashmi-mardana (clash of rays)

4. Apasavya: When a planet's disc, covering each other moves south (in opposite direction, in retrograde motion), Apasavya occurs. This is also known by the name Apasavya
.
Base on the significance (karaka) and house rulership of the will suffer or gain accordingly.
Suppose one planet defeats another planet. This means that the people will give problems to other people and the leaders represented by the losing planet will suffer.

Example: if Venus and mars have conjunction and if Venus have more degree than Mars and Venus will be defeated in planetary war by Mars. the person will suffer in all Venus stuff like relationship, women, love, and creativity. The person will be have more martian energy and can be aggressive and good fighter. The person also suffer in where planets sitting in the birth chart as well as what house they rule in the birth chart.

Personality Astrology

When you ask about your personality, most of the astrologer describes your ascendant. But this is half of the story about your personality. To have the full picture of your personality we need to look at the ruler of 1st house as well. This is known as ruling planet of the chart. This very important planet because we incarnate in this world with the identity of that planet. The ruling planet of your chart is determined by the planet that rules the sign on the cusp of your first house (your rising sign/ascendant), and where is the first house lord (ruling planet) placed will shows where you are most interested in our life or you destined to do those things. However, if you have a planet that is conjunct to your ascendant or ruling planet, that planet might be have big influence on your personality and if any planet situated in 1st house or other planets aspects to your ascendant will also have influence on your personality.

Ascendant or rising sign is our natural expression in the world. The way you present yourself to the world and the way others see you.  The ascendant ruler is important to understanding because understanding of your ascendant ruler gives you more detail about how you interact and approach the world. The ascendant ruler’s house and sign can tell you a lot about where you are likely to find a lot of significant activity in your life. That planet could be said to defined you, your outlook and how you appear to others. e.g. Someone with Sagittarius rising might be characterized as a Jupiterian kind of person, hopeful, optimistic, concerned with achieving vision and higher wisdom. Someone with Aries rising might be considered a Martian kind of person, impulsive and go getter. But this is not complete personality of you. For the complete information of your personality you need to check where is your ascendant lord placed, in which house and which sign, if this conjunct with other planets or aspect by other planets.

So if the Aries ascendant persons Mars is placed in 12th house in the sign of Pisces What does it mean? This get’s complicated as a Aries ascendant people you may think that you May be impulsive and aggressive, but that is not the case. Now your personality mixes Aries and Pisces sign because Mars is in Pisces sign. So you can be shy, not very active or passive active, and what you like most in your life? You like most of the 12th house things in your life. You like meditation, spirituality, isolation you May be a hidden personality, who don’t like to interact with people and don’t like to be a public figure.

Or if you have Mars in 8th house then Mars will be in Scorpio sign then you May be aggressive or impulsive but at the time you are very secretive in nature, you are very vulnerable emotionally and investigative. Now because this is placed in 8th house you like to explore 8th house stuff like, metaphysical studies, deep hidden mysterious of life, or you May be interested in some secretive activity.

Or if Mars is in 6th house, then what will be your personality ? Now Mars is in Virgo sign in 6th house. 6th house is the most difficult house in astrology and your ascendant lord in 6th house what does it mean ? It means you are dealing with most of the difficult thing in your life. And you feel dealing with people is just like a work. You are doing hardest work to achieve something. You spend a lot of energy in the tasks of daily living. There is also a general desire to improve themselves ( the 6th house corresponds with the attitude of service as well as self-improvement for the sake of that performing that service). This is a complex thing with a different possibilities. When analyzing the personality of a person, focus on the rising sign, and then find the house and sign of the planet in the birth chart.

In the cases of the ascendant lord or chart ruler being conjunct or aspected by the planet, then it becomes a little more important to consider the influence of the planet that conjunct or aspect. . If someone is Aries rising with Saturn on the ascendant, the person will seem much more Saturnian than a regular Aries rising person might appear. You can be more serious and not so active in life as Aries ascendant people are used to.

This is the reason that, two people having same ascendant will not have same nature. It modified according to placement of ascendant ruler, in which sign, house, aspects and conjunction with any other planets.

Axis Astrology

There are 6 axis in Astrology. Each axis is concerned with a unique set of theme of life. The Signs that are 180 degrees apart or opposite each other known as Signs in Polarity. The opposite ends of the axis describe opposite ways of life. An axis may connect two opposing houses e.g. First house and seventh house or second house and eighth house are the axis may connect two opposing signs.  Two Signs in polarity such as these often combine to make a whole, it is like two opposite friend's balancing each others weaknesses. Signs in polarity often feel a strong pull to one another. They have the opposite quality, often uneasy with one another, but those in polarity complement each other, even though tension sometimes exists between them.

Let’s take a look at each of these opposite, axis polarities in astrology.

Aries and Libra axis:

Self versus others axis, this is the axis of relationship. This sign is about creating a balance between self and others. 1st house orients towards self-awareness and 7th house orient towards awareness of the other. This axis connecting the 1st and 7th houses, and is about learning life’s lessons through interpersonal relationships. If 1st is dominant then we learn most easily by observing the effects of our actions on others. If 7th house is dominant, then we learn most easily by observing reactions of others, and the things that they do. This is a subtle difference, since the interaction keeps going back and forth. These two signs opposite sign represent the will and willingness, give and take, self and other. Here we are learning to become aware of the needs, realities and give to other people. The lesson being learned in this axis is to balance the relationship.

Taurus and Scorpio axis:

Security versus insecurity axis, it is the axis of dealing with underlying fears. This sign is about creating a balance between insecurity by securing the life by having some possession or value in life. We all have some fears in life, and all the security we do in life depends on these fears. This axis is about the 2nd and 8th house. 2nd house is about possessions and keeping safe, it is the house of comfort zone.  This is probably one of the most difficult axis to work with because it takes painful hard work to get out of fears of life. Second house seeks for peace by securing oneself at the expense of change and Scorpio yearns for change at the expense of peace. This axis seeks a balance of energy flow between the two axis by aligning oneself with processes of transformation (8th house), not allowing to push and making oneself secure. Here we are learning to become aware of volatility of life. The lesson being learned in this axis is to balance the insecurity with the security.

Gemini and Sagittarius axis:

Logic versus Wisdom, this is the axis of logic and intelligence and integrate with insight of enculturation and vision. 3rd house is about to gather information and disseminate and focus on the intricate details of the component parts, while 9th house is about wisdom, vision and knowledge about abstract thinking (which you believe in something without any facts and proof). This axis is about to align the polarity with the intelligence, thought, facts, information and integrate with perception of philosophy and new horizons. 3rd and 9th house is about developing effective communication. When considering personal questions about communicating with others, we need to reference both the 3rd and 9th house axis. In 3rd house we are gathering thoughts, ideas, information, and putting the pieces together, and in 9th house we need to do something with the pieces gathered and building something and making a positive change in our life and in the world.

Cancer versus Capricorn axis:

Inner peace versus outer action, this is the axis of finding balance between inner peace while fulfilling duties. This polarity represents a distinct contrast of needs for peaceful inside while doing duty without mental disturbance. 10th house represents strength and capability for fulfilling responsibility. 4th house represent inner peace, nurturing, emotional bonding, security and a deep sensitivity to be peaceful inside. 4th house is the house of moksha. It is the house of moksha from ego or self. In Mahabharata Arjuna the great warrior was finding difficulty with killing his own kith and kin in a war, due to that he was not peaceful inside. Lord Krishna says to him, you just do your duty and don’t attach with them. The meaning of this conservation between Arjuna and Krishna is related with 4th and 10th house axis. We incarnate in this world for fulfilling our duty ( 10th house) and still not disturbed by them and peaceful inside ( 4th house), so that we can get moksha ( liberation). If you can understand this concept, then it is for you to do mediation.

Leo versus Aquarius axis:

Individual power versus social power, this is the axis of finding balance between individuality creativity and group’s creativity. 5th house about power means leadership and using power to accomplish something for self. The 11th house is about equality, ideal is that each individual has an inborn capacity to ascend to a level of consciousness. Here the polarity of balance between the self-orientation of personal creative expression to the collective orientation of universal ideals. 5th house wants distinction, and 11th house demands collective consciousness of the group. In this axis issues of self-importance need to balance with actions directed towards the greater whole. For this reason, there can be no human interaction devoid of compassion. The expression on the outside may take the form of a new solution dealing with a social or world issue. The 11th house is about joining in and participating in an already ongoing creative process. The lesson being learned in this axis is to balance between the groups creative action is greater than any single individual’s contribution.

Virgo versus Pisces Axis:

Service to the self-versus and service to the universe, this is the axis of finding balance between criticism and acceptance someone without criticism. 6th house is about criticism, perfection, organization and putting things place. This is the polarity between order and chaos. 12th house is also about centered in the invisible world, the psychic and the spiritual realm.  The 6th house is about conscious who live in daily routines, compares, contrasts and dealing with daily activities. 12th house is about conscious who believe in unknown e.g. prayer, meditation and let go, merges and dissolves with universe when things not working out. This is the axis of creating balance between protecting ourselves against being emotionally drained by other people’s needs, and still be present with them or when we drained out by criticism and perfection of life we need to calm down our mind with prayers and meditation.

In axis the pull may be strong in both directions, but this is the way of universe to act keep balance in life.
